Historic payment network Western Union says it plans to launch its own stablecoin on the Solana Network in 2026. Stablecoin Issuer Circle Targeting $7,200,000,000 Valuation in Upcoming IPO

The company behind the second-largest USD-pegged stablecoin by market cap is naming its price for its upcoming US initial public offering (IPO). According to a Reuters report, USDC-issuer Circle says it is aiming for a $7.2 billion valuation in its upcoming IPO – about $28 per share – partially because of the current administration’s friendlier outlook on crypto regulations. US dollar-pegged stablecoins aim to maintain a 1:1 value with the US dollar. Tether’s USDT is the largest USD-pegged stablecoin by market value. Says Chief Investment Officer of Running Point Capital, Michael Ashley Schulman, “Issues regarding memecoin hype and more specifically Trump’s ventures into a namesake coin should not directly affect the outlook for stablecoins backed by hard currency.” According to the widely followed pseudonymous crypto analyst The Flow Horse, the Circle IPO valuation is “cheap.” “Circle IPO seems interesting to me....

Crypto Czar and Republican Congressmen hope for legislation

Image
David Sacks, the “crypto czar,” hosted a press conference alongside Representative French Hill, Senator John Boozman, Senator Tim Scott, and Representative GT Thompson to assure the world that they hope to advance stablecoin and cryptocurrency market structure legislation in both the House and the Senate in the coming months. The congressmen indicated that the market structure bill was likely to resemble the earlier FIT 21 bill, which would make the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) the principal market regulator for any cryptocurrency that fit its broad definition of decentralized. However, certain roles would be preserved for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) .  Additionally, the congressmen suggested that the stablecoin bill would resemble the bill recently introduced by Senator Bill Hagerty. This legislation will reportedly make the Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) the regulators who would oversee diffe...

Fantom stablecoin watcher alleges ‘liquidation’ scheme | Protos

Image
A self-described Fantom maximalist has alleged that ‘loyal, OG stakers’ of at least 200 million fantom tokens (FTM) experienced a forced liquidation to the benefit of the Fantom Foundation. He somehow claimed to have found ‘the biggest rug pull on Fantom ever’ even though he offered no blockchain evidence. As if the story wasn’t difficult enough to believe, he further claimed that this ‘rug pull’ was funding Fantom’s assistance of an entirely new blockchain, Sonic. To start, there are a few things that are certainly true, without the above conjecture. Fantom is indisputably committed to a new blockchain, Sonic. Furthermore, Fantom is pegging FTM with a 1:1 convertibility promise for S, Sonic’s new proprietary token. The well-funded Fantom Foundation is also contributing 200 million FTM and promising a 100 million airdrop of S tokens to hype the launch. Meta faces pressure from Congresswoman Maxine Waters over crypto trademark filings

Congresswoman Maxine Waters raised concerns over Meta’s recent trademark filings related to crypto, seeking clarification on the company’s plans in web3. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) sent a letter to Meta executives, seeking answers about Meta’s apparent intention to expand its involvement in the crypto ecosystem. Waters, who serves as the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, conveyed her concerns through a letter addressed to Meta’s top executives, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Javier Olivan. The letter delves into inquiries about Meta’s strategic direction in web3 and explores its stance on stablecoin initiatives following Meta’s submission of five trademark applications related to crypto and blockchain products with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. “With its initial filings on Mar. 18, 2022, Meta’s application submissions as of Jan. 22 appear to represent a continued intention to expand the compan...

Trader swaps 131k stablecoins for $0 during USDR depeg

An attempt to withdraw USDR stablecoins amid a liquidity crunch appears to have gone horribly wrong. During yesterday's real-estate-backed U.S. dollar stablecoin Real USD (USDR) crisis, a trader appears to have swapped 131,350 USDR for 0 USD Coin (USDC), resulting in a complete loss on investment. According to the October 12 report by blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain, the swap occurred on the BNB Chain through decentralized exchange OpenOcean, at a time when USDR depegged from par value by nearly 50% due to a liquidity crunch. A maximal extractable value (MEV) bot subsequently picked up the discrepancy, netting a total of $107,002 in profits through an arbitrage trade.  During periods of poor liquidity, slippage on DEXs can reach as high as 100%. In September 2022, Cointelegraph reported that a trader attempted to sell $1.8 million in Compound USD (cUSDC) through Uniswap DEX V2 and only got $500 worth of assets in return. An MEV, too, in this incident, performed an arbitrag...

Cosmos EUR stablecoin project to unwind after 2 years

Image
"The lack of real-world applications for blockchain has led to low demand for non-USD stablecoins," e-Money wrote. According to a post on January 9, e-Money — a stablecoin project in the Cosmos ecosystem — said it would discontinue the issuance of its euro stablecoin EURR effective March 6, 2023. In explaining the decision, e-Money wrote:  "The lack of real-world applications for blockchain has led to low demand for non-USD stablecoins. The upcoming European MiCA legislation is expected to hinder the scalability of Euro-backed stablecoins and limit business opportunities in the sector. European MiCA legislation in its current form favors commercial banks as future issuers of Euro stablecoins, hurting innovation in the European Union." Until the deadline, users can redeem their EEUR by swapping their stablecoin s for digital assets such as OSMO, ATOM, or USD Coin (USDC) on Cosmos decentralized exchange Osmosis (OSMO). For amounts over 100,000 EEUR, e-Money recom...
