SEC Ends Investigation Into Robinhood

Image
Just last week, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) made the decision to end its enforcement action against Coinbase. The move was a key part of its continued shift, as it ends its combative stance opposing the cryptocurrency industry. That has continued this week, as the SEC has reportedly ended its investigation into Robinhood. According to a press release from the platform, the agency’s enforcement division has ceased its probe and “will not pursue enforcement action.” Indeed, the update follows the issuance of a Wells Notice from the agency in May 2024 that Robinhood chief legal officer Dan Gallagher says “never should have been opened.” JUST IN: SEC ends investigation into Robinhood. — Watcher.Guru (@WatcherGuru) February 24, 2025 Also Read: XRP ETF Gets New Timeline for SEC Approval: What to Know SEC Closes Robinhood Investigation As Crypto Policy Overhaul Continues Just one month ago, the SEC announced the launch of its new crypto task f...

Crypto Czar and Republican Congressmen hope for legislation

Image
David Sacks, the “crypto czar,” hosted a press conference alongside Representative French Hill, Senator John Boozman, Senator Tim Scott, and Representative GT Thompson to assure the world that they hope to advance stablecoin and cryptocurrency market structure legislation in both the House and the Senate in the coming months. The congressmen indicated that the market structure bill was likely to resemble the earlier FIT 21 bill, which would make the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) the principal market regulator for any cryptocurrency that fit its broad definition of decentralized. However, certain roles would be preserved for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) .  Additionally, the congressmen suggested that the stablecoin bill would resemble the bill recently introduced by Senator Bill Hagerty. This legislation will reportedly make the Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) the regulators who would oversee diffe...

ECB president calls for European SEC creation

The head of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde, said that the EU needs its own version of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). As Financial Times reports, citing Lagarde’s words at a speech in Frankfurt, the creation of a European SEC will help attract the huge funds needed to solve the triple problem of “deglobalization, demographics and decarbonization.” In addition, the official called for an end to the system of national financial exchanges, saying that “the European capital market needs consolidated market infrastructures.” Lagarde also noted that US bond markets are three times larger than those in Europe, and the volume of venture capital funding in the EU is one-fifth that of the U.S. despite the fact that the U.S. economy is more than half the size of the EU, she added. UK risks regulating NFTs the wrong way, says Mintable CEO

Image
“It’s not just a piece of artwork”: Mintable CEO Zach Burks argues that the United Kingdom government still hasn’t caught up on what NFTs are becoming. The United Kingdom’s government is in danger of regulating nonfungible tokens (NFTs) in a way that doesn’t suit the true nature of the nascent technology, says Mintable CEO and founder Zach Burks.   In an interview with Cointelegraph, Burks said he believes a recent report from a U.K. parliamentary committee significantly exaggerates the role NFTs play in copyright infringement and fails to recognize that they are more than just volatile digital pictures. “NFTs are in a transition phase where they’re moving away from the speculative boom of PFPs, and now it’s going into utilities of brands implementing NFTs across a whole range of different things,” Burks explained. In the Oct. 11 report, the Culture, Media and Sport Committee urged the government to take action to protect artists and content creators from copyright infringement asso...

Indonesian government looks to NFTs to preserve cultural heritage

Image
The Deputy of Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy explains how NFTs and cryptocurrency can help solve social and economic challenges within Indonesia. One of the primary benefits of Blockchain Technology is the ability to record and capture information in a permanent, tamper-proof record. Once data is on a Blockchain network, it cannot be altered, making it an ideal solution for record-keeping.  Tokenized assets, such as nonfungible tokens (NFTs), can also be placed on a blockchain. This can verify ownership while demonstrating that certain events occurred at particular times. For example, the Meta History Museum tokenized data from the war in Ukraine in May 2022, placing the information on a blockchain network to preserve records of the war. Ensuring that specific events take place is also becoming more important than ever due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its ability to generate deep fakes, along with historical images that may appear realistic.
