Image
The now-defunct crypto exchange Mt. Gox has pushed back the deadline for its creditor repayments by a year just four days before its deadline at the end of the month. “As it is desirable to make the Repayments to such rehabilitation creditors to the extent reasonably practicable, the Rehabilitation Trustee, with the permission of the court, has changed the deadline for the Repayments from October 31, 2025 (Japan Standard Time) to October 31, 2026 (Japan Standard Time).” the exchange’s rehabilitation trustee said .  Many Creditors Have Still Not Received Their Repayments The exchange’s rehabilitation trustee said that it has “largely completed” the base repayment, early lump-sum repayment, and intermediate repayment for creditors that were able to complete their eligibility procedures without any issues.  There are, however, still many creditors that have not received their repayments either because they failed to complete the necessary p...

XRP price faces Q4 rout and 20% drop

Image
XRP has entered a strong correction cycle after testing a multi-year resistance trendline. Is the bull market on pause for now? XRP (XRP) price has dropped 18.5% from its local high of $0.67 on Nov. 23. And, it appears the cryptocurrency will suffer more selloffs in the coming weeks. XRP technicals hint at extended correction XRP has failed to break above a descending trendline resistance since January 2018. And, it fell short of logging a breakout above in November 2023, as well, illustrating a psychological selling pressure around the line. XRP/USD weekly price chart. Source: TradingView Each bearish rejection after testing the descending trendline resistance has historically resulted in a decline toward the ascending support trendline.  The downside target appears around $0.50, interestingly closer to XRP's 50-week (the red wave) and 200-week (the blue wave) exponential moving averages (EMA). Thus, XRP's price risks declining by 20% before 2024, if this fractal plays out...

Bitcoin’s break above $32,400 points to the continuation of the bull move, but will traders be able to sustain the current momentum? Bitcoin (BTC) easily soared above the $31,000 to $32,400 resistance zone on Oct. 23, which came as a suprise to many market participants. Usually, the price tends to consolidate or hesitate near stiff overhead resistance levels but that was not the case this time around. Market participants are bullish as they anticipate a Bitcoin spot exchange-traded fund to receive approval sooner rather than later. Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Oct. 23 that the listing of BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF on the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) was “all part of the process” of bringing the ETF to market. He added that it was “hard not to view this as them getting signal that approval is certain/imminent.” However, a DTCC spokesperson later said that the listing of the said ETF has been there since August an...

Bitcoin and select altcoins are at risk of falling below their respective support levels and starting a deeper correction. Bitcoin (BTC) managed to stay above $27,000 for the past three days but its 9% loss last week spooked some newbie traders. Glassnode data shows that short-term holders, who acquired Bitcoin less than 155 days ago, have been moving coins to the exchanges at a loss since April 16.  While short-term traders are panicking and focusing on the $25,000 level on the downside, some analysts are turning bullish for the next year. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Jamie Douglas Coutts expects Bitcoin to reach $50,000 by April 2024. Daily cryptocurrency market performance. Source: Coin360 Another bullish voice was that of Standard Chartered analyst Geoff Kendrick who said that the “crypto winter” may be over. He projected that Bitcoin could skyrocket to $100,000 by end-2024. What are the important support levels where the latest leg of the correction may attract buyers? Let’s st...

Bitcoin holds $28K due to spot buying, but institutional investors are still selling

Image
BTC price continues to show bullish momentum, but the absence of whale buyers and institutional investor selling threatens to weaken the current rally. Bitcoin’s (BTC) price broke above the February 2023 highs of $25,200 after U.S. inflation data was in consensus with the market expectation. The potential fallout of the global banking system further promoted Bitcoin investment as a non-correlated global hedging instrument similar to gold in March. The correlation between gold and BTC has been rising since the start of the month. Correlation coefficient between BTC and gold. Source: TradingView However, institutions have become net sellers of Bitcoin in 2023, which raises some red flags. Bitcoin whales, holding between 10 and 10,000 BTC, have not participated in the current rally. It appears that retail investors are mainly driving the uptrend. The divergence between whale and retail investment could cause a short-term pullback in Bitcoin prices. Institutions are forced BTC sellers, s...

Credit Suisse has pulled the U.S. equities markets lower, but a positive sign is that Bitcoin and select altcoins are holding near their local highs. The United States equities Markets tumbled on March 15 after Saudi National Bank, Swiss Bank Credit Suisse’s largest investor, said it will not be able to provide any more funding to Credit Suisse due to regulatory limitations. Investors are nervous because Credit Suisse, which has large U.S. and global operations, warned on March 14 that it had found “certain material weaknesses” in its financial reporting processes for 2021 and 2022. Shares of Credit Suisse plummeted to an all-time low on March 15. After the events of the past few days, the S&P 500 has given back all its gains for the year and is trading flat. In comparison, Bitcoin (BTC) is holding on to a large part of its gains and is up nearly 47% in 2023. Trezor Bitcoin analyst Josef Tětek believes the banking crisis could be positive for Bitcoin as it could emerge as a safe h...

Ethereum on-chain data suggests ETH sell pressure could be a non-event after the Shanghai upgrade

Image
A recent Binance report details the status of Ethereum staking and explores why the Shanghai upgrade may not result in the ETH sell pressure some traders have predicted. The upcoming Ethereum (ETH) Shanghai hardfork is slated to occur in March 2023 and the upgrade will cap off the network's move to proof-of-stake (PoS) which started during the “Merge” on Sept. 15, 2022. Once Shanghai is implemented, previously locked Ether will gradually become liquid for the first time since December 2020.  According to on-chain Etherscan data, over 16.6 million Ether are currently locked in the PoS staking protocol which was valued at $28 billion on Feb. 16, 2023. Ethereum’s move from proof-of-work (PoW) to PoS has started to achieve the original goal which was to make Ether’s supply deflationary. In the 154-days since the merge, over 24,800 Ether have been burned to make the token 0.05% deflationary on a yearly basis. Key Ether stats since the Merge. Source: ultra sound money On. Binance holds token collateral and user funds on same wallet by ‘mistake’

Binance previously said the firm’s corporate holdings are recorded in separate accounts and should not form part of the proof-of-reserves calculations. Major Cryptocurrency Exchange Binance reportedly admitted that it mistake nly stores some customer funds in the same wallet with its collateral for some in-house token s. After the revelation, Binance started the process of transferring the assets in question to dedicated collateral wallet s. Binance mistakenly put collateral for some of the Binance-minted tokens, or B-Tokens, in a wallet that also holds customer assets, Bloomberg reported on Jan. 24. On Monday, Binance released a proof of collateral for B-Tokens, providing information for all 94 tokens issued by Binance. The firm previously stressed that B-Tokens are always fully collateralized and backed 1:1. According to the proof of collateral, Binance reserves for almost 50% of all B-Tokens are currently stored in a single wallet called “Binance 8.” The wallet holds signific...
